Epidemiology & Biostatistics
Oregon MPH at Oregon Health & Science University
The Epidemiology & Biostatistics combined track at OHSU trains health professionals in the population perspective toward health care and disease prevention. Courses in this track emphasize the use of quantitative methods for analyzing and addressing health problems to support basic and applied research in public health and health care.
The core curriculum offered to all students in the OMPH program is intended to provide an understanding of the statistical, epidemiological, political, behavioral, environmental science, and organizational basis of public health and of the health care system in general.
The epidemiology and biostatistics concentration focuses on providing students with epidemiological and statistical reasoning skills and competency in studying the distribution and dynamics of disease in populations, in evaluating health care programs, and in conducting clinical, behavioral, and health services research.
The Department of Public Health & Preventive Medicine at OHSU received the 2004 Outstanding Educational Program of the Year Award from the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine.
Track Learning Competencies
The goal of the Epidemiology & Biostatistics is to train theoretically-grounded, culturally competent, and technically skilled public health professionals.
Students graduating from this track will be able to:
- Apply population-based concepts of epidemiology and risk determination to the assessment of health problems.
- Apply evidence-based knowledge of health determinants to public health issues.
- Apply and interpret a variety of statistical methods commonly used in medical and public health research.
- Formulate and test a researchable question.
- Identify ethical problems that arise when epidemiology is used to guide public policy decisions.
- Identify cultural dimensions of conducting research, including culturally sensitive recruitment of study participants, and develop strategies for interpretation of data in the larger cultural context.
- Assess and interpret relevant literature in the area of public health and epidemiology.
- Integrate understanding of the interrelationships among the organization, delivery, and financing of health-related services.

Communicate public health principles and concepts through various strategies across multiple sectors of the community.

The MPH in combined Epidemiology & Biostatistics is currently only offered at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

Meet Melissa Wei!
As a MPH student in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics track at OHSU, excelled in the area of research. Aside from her outstanding achievements at OHSU, Melissa has also impressed the public health community with her efforts as a research assistant at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Her research on calcium and magnesium intake and the risk of colorectal adenomas has important implications for cancer control and public health. She has a great passion for integrating nutrition and prevention principles into the practice of medicine. Melissa has a very bright future ahead of her as a nutritional epidemiologist and researcher, a future that is amply supported by her growing body of scholarly work.
