Intern sought for Hands to Hearts International (HHI) - Posted 6/11/07 http://www.handstohearts.org/home.htm . Specifically, an intern to create an organizational matrix that would detail potential partner NGOs working in the same region, with similar goals/mission or programming where our services would be the best fit. A bit about my organization is this: HHI is a 501c3, based here in Portland, but working primarily in India with plans to expand to more countries in the next few years. Our organization is dedicated to improving of the health and well-being of orphaned and vulnerable children through improved early childhood care. HHI reaches the world’s neediest children at their most important developmental time, age 0-3 years old (we are expanding our training to support children to the age of 5). The lack of personalized care during the early years of life has a devastating effect on a child’s health, growth, personality adjustment and cognitive capacity. The impacts of this stunted growth has dire individual and societal consequences. HHI offers its innovative early childhood care model through a menu of technical assistance services to local and international public and private partners. HHI’s simple, cost effective and highly replicable tools and resources build the capacity of partners and caregivers to improve early childhood development in orphaned and vulnerable children, in both community and institutional settings. Through HHI’s support and training, caregivers improve their capacity to nurture a child’s language, social, cognitive and physical skills, as well as enhance attachment and bonding.. The impact of HHI’s trainings have been profound, orphanage directors and HHI partners report that: • children are sick less often are healthier faster, and thereby need less medicine; • children gain more weight and are easier to soothe; and, • caregivers are more nurturing, practiced better hygiene, take greater pride in their work and overall appear happier with their jobs. HHI’s technical services and partnerships for early childhood development address the unique needs of partners through local interventions. HHI’s technical service options to its partners include: • early childhood development care program design in community, foster care, educational or institutional care settings; • caregiver or teacher training; • orphanage management training; • quality certification training and accreditation; and, • performance monitoring and evaluation. Internship Opportunities at the Native American Rehabilitation Association of the Northwest, Inc. (NARA) –Posted 5/16/07
About NARA: The mission of NARA, NW is to provide education, physical and mental health services and substance abuse treatment that is culturally appropriate to American Indians, Alaska Natives and other vulnerable people. 1. Community organizing: Have you heard that the President's budget eliminates all funding for Urban American Indian Health Services? The argument is that there are enough community health clinics to care for this population so they don’t need duplicate services. Currently, as many as 70% of Americans identifying as American Indians and Alaska Natives live in urban areas. The 34 urban Indian health clinics within the Urban Indian Health Program provide culturally relevant medical services to this population. As reported by the clinics, losing Title V would result in bankruptcies and defaults on leases as well as the near-certain discontinuation of well over half of the clinics providing services to approximately 120,000 urban Indian patients annually. In sum, lack of services would increase, not decrease, the gross health care disparities for American Indians and Alaska Natives. If you are interested in working to prevent this budget from going forth, the Native American Rehabilitation Association in Portland would love to have your help organizing outreach efforts.
2. Outreach library: If you are a good writer and have an eye for design, the Native American Rehabilitation Association has an ideal position for you. Help us organize, update and facilitate dissemination of our internal brochures and documents in order to educate the urban American Indian community on the many services we provide.
If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please contact Becky Wright at bwright@naranorthwest.org or 503-224-1044 ex 238.
